ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Guide: Past Winners and Predictions

The ICC Cricket World Cup has been held a total of twelve times, meaning the upcoming tournament is set to be one of the most exciting. It is the first time that the teams in the tournament had to qualify through qualifying rounds, rather than being selected based on ranking.

In previous years, the ICC Cricket World Cup has seen a multitude of winners. However, it will be the first time that the tournament is played without the West Indies, a team that have previously won the tournament twice. In 1975, at the first ever ICC Cricket World Cup tournament, the West Indies were crowned champions. Four years later, the Windies retained their title, defending the World Cup. In 1983, a new champion was crowned in the form of India.

Four years later, Australia won the first of their five World Cup trophies in 1987. In 1992, Pakistan won the trophy before Sri Lanka won the following edition in 1996. Then, amazingly, Australia won the ICC Cricket World Cup three times on the trot, in 1999, 2003 and 2007. 2011 saw India win the World Cup for the second time, before Australia won their fifth World Cup trophy in 2015. Then, crowned for the first time, England defeated New Zealand in London in the most recent ICC Cricket World Cup tournament in 2019. It means that going into the 2023 World Cup, England are the defending champions.

Winning Teams

  • Australia – 5 time winners – 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015
  • India – 2 time winners – 1983, 2011
  • West Indies – 2 time winners – 1975, 1979
  • Pakistan – 1 time winners – 1992
  • Sri Lanka – 1 time winners – 1996
  • England – 1 time winners – 2019

ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Guide: Featured Teams

The ten teams to feature in the 2023 World Cup include:

  1. Afghanistan
  2. Australia
  3. Bangladesh
  4. England
  5. India
  6. Netherlands
  7. New Zealand
  8. Pakistan
  9. South Africa
  10. Sri Lanka

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is set to be an exciting competition as several teams that previously were successful miss out. The most noteworthy of the lot is the West Indies, who have missed out for the first time in history.

Over the years, the ODI World Cup tournament selected teams based on rankings. This year, the qualification process involved a series of matches played between 2020 and 2023. The West Indies missed out because Scotland were the team to knock them out. However, Scotland missed out on qualification because of the Netherlands, who took the final place and secured a return to the tournament for the first time since 2011. Of each of these teams, we take a look at how they have done previously and what is to be expected.

Afghanistan

The Afghanistan national cricket team were only declared a test team in 2017. However, they have previously featured in ODI tournament, finishing in the group stage of the CWC.

They are a youthful team that are coached by Jonathan Trott and captained by Hashmatullah Shahidi. It remains to be seen if Afghanistan will progress past the group stage in the 13th edition of the CWC.

Australia

One of the favourites to win the Cricket World Cup, Australia hold the record for winning the competition the most times. Having secured the trophy a total of five times, and being the only team to have ever won it three times in a row, Australia are not to be underestimated. Coached by Andrew McDonald and captained by Pat Cummins, we could see the Aussies win the competition yet again.

Bangladesh

The Bangladesh national cricket team have previously finished as quarterfinalists at the Cricket World Cup. Coached by Chandika Hathurusingha and captained by Shakib Al Hasan, the team acquired test status in 2000. They are an exciting team to watch and will have their eyes on advancing to the latter stages of the 2023 CWC.

England

The defending champions, England will certainly have to take the 2023 CWC seriously. The cricket team won the last World Cup in 2019 and will be aiming to build upon that success. Coached by Matthew Mott and captained by Jos Buttler, the English national team are one of the favourites in India for the 2023 edition of the CWC.

India

Arguably, India are the ultimate favourites to win the 2023 CWC. The Indian national team won their first ever CWC in 1983 when they were hosting the tournament. Then, in 2011, they won it when it was hosted in Bangladesh. India are the current top team in the world based on ranking and, as the host nation, the expectation is for the Indian national team to win the tournament in 2023.

The Netherlands

The Netherlands will have to impress at the tournament, having featured for the first time in over 10 years. They have only ever finished in the group stage which is a slight let down. However, this year they will have another chance to try and rectify their last year’s finish. The Netherlands are managed by Ryan ten Doeschate and captained by Scott Edwards.

New Zealand

New Zealand is arguably the most unfortunate team in CWC history. They have finished as runners-up on two separate occasions, and have never won the tournament. The two times they finished as runners-up, were in 2015 and 2019, i.e – the most recent editions of the tournament. Could they make it three for three in 2023 or will they actually go on to win the 2023 CWC.

Pakistan

One of the most fascinating teams to watch at the CWC will be Pakistan. The reason why is because of their long-history with India. Pakistan previously won the Cricket World Cup in 1992.

They are one of the most popular teams in the world but will be in for a challenge when they arrive in India.

South Africa

A team that will certainly be eye catching is South Africa, who have finished as semi-finalists in the CWC. The team will be aiming to create a memorable finish for their fans to celebrate. Hopefully the South African team will be able to cause a few upsets at the 2023 CWC.

Sri Lanka

Last but not least, Sri Lanka will have the world viewing them, wondering if they will have the chance to win the CWC for the second time. The cricket national team won the CWC in 1996. It remains to be seen how they will perform in India but with all eyes on them, Sri Lanka may be the team to actually win the trophy in 2023.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Guide: Prize Money

For the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, the prize pool for the tournament is $10,000,000. The prize money was the same for the 2019 edition of the tournament. That means, not much has changed on that front.

The winning team will receive $4 million while the runners-up receives $2 million. The other two semi-finalists will get $800,000 each. The remaining six teams will receive $100,000, each for participating. An additional $40,000 will be paid out to the winners of every match during the group stage.
