The Big Bash League is already underway and one of the most exciting games so far has been the derby clash between the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder. The two teams will be at it again on the 21st of January to play the reverse fixture of the game. Sydney Sixers Seeking Another Win
The previous fixture between the Sixers and Thunder resulted in a victory for the Sixers. The team managed to beat the 133 total set by Thunder with 22 balls to spare. Having only lost three wickets, the Sixers scored 134 for 3 in 16.2 overs. As they prepare for the reverse fixture, the Sixers will be looking at their star performers in the derby win over Thunder.
One of the standout players for the Sixers since the Big Bash League started has been Sean Abbott. The bowler has strung up a series of great performances for the Sixers including a man of the match display in the reverse fixture. He managed to take three wickets whilst only conceding 9 runs from 4 overs. Economically speaking, that is only 9 runs from 24 balls, an economy of 2.667.
The other class bowlers on the day were Ben Dwarshuis and Todd Murphy. Dwarshuis claimed two wickets for 28 runs from 4 overs. As for Murphy, the bowler only conceded 20 runs from his 4 overs and took a lone wicket himself.
On the batting front, the Sixers relied heavily on both Jordan Silk and Moises Henriques. The former scored an impressive 59 not-out from 42 balls. As for Henriques, his 53 from 38 balls not-out also contributed to the success of the team. One of the surprises in the fixture was the dismissal of Josh Philippe, who had only scored 6 runs from the 6 balls he faced.
Can Thunder Take Their Revenge?
Big Bash League fans will keep their eyes on Thunder to see whether they will be able to defeat the Sixers in the reverse fixture. Whilst the concept of victory is sweet, the reality is Thunder look too weak to do so. The team put in a terrible performance in the derby and were embarrassed by their rivals. However, on a positive note, they couldn’t do any worse in the upcoming match.
Although Thunder appeared to be a wounded animal in the game, an individual performance from Sam Whiteman was quite inspiring. The batsman scored a total of 42 from 34 balls. Similarly, Alex Ross also managed to reach 34 from the 34 balls that he faced. Ben Cutting made their total score a little less embarrassing with 26 not-out from 15 balls. However, Thunder could not reach the expected heights from their batsman. And it got even worse from their bowlers.
On the bowling front, Thunder’s standout player was Chris Green, who took two wickets for 29 runs from the 4 overs that he played. His total was not too impressive but the best from his team. His teammates, Brendan Doggett and Ben Cutting, could not do any better. Doggett managed to claim a wicket for 23 runs from the 4 overs that he bowled. Cutting, on the other hand, only bowled a single over where he conceded 14 runs.
