ICC Cricket World Cup Week One Review
The ICC CWC is set to be one of the most exciting editions of the tournament to date. It is hosted in India where the anticipation is for the host to win the competition. Additionally, England as the defending champion will be seeking to defend their title four years after success in 2019. Of the ten teams to compete in the competition, India are seen as favourites to win. This total was still enough to fend off the attempt from the Netherlands, who scored 205 runs from 41.0 overs. Pakistan defeated the Netherlands by 81 runs with their star players scoring 68 runs apiece. Mohammad Rizwan scored 68 runs from 75 balls whilst Saud Shakeel scored 68 from 52 balls.
Bas de Leede may feel hard done by, having scored 67 runs from 68 balls. Unfortunately for the Dutch player, his teammates did not seem to replicate same form, with the national team being bowled out in 41 overs.
Day Three: Bangladesh vs Afghanistan
On October the 7th, Bangladesh faced off against Afghanistan in what can only be described as an eventful game. Afghanistan, starting as the batsman of the game, scored a total of 156 runs from 37.2 overs. The best batsman of the team was Rahmanullah Gurbaz who scored 47 runs from 62 balls. Unfortunately for the opening batsman, his teammates could not replicate his fine form.
Bangladesh defeated this score by claiming 158-4 from 34.4 overs. The top players of the team were Mehidy Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored 57 and 59 runs, respectively. Their totals were claimed from 73 and 83 balls, respectively.
Day Three: South Africa vs Sri Lanka
On the 7th of October, South Africa opened the batting against Sri Lanka, scoring a subliminal total of 428-5 from the full 50 overs. The South African national team scored this total through several top performers, including Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram. De Kock scored a total of 100 runs from 84 balls, van der Dussen scored 108 runs from 110 balls and Markram scored 106 from 54 balls. That included a total of 14 fours and 3 sixes.
Sri Lanka made a valiant effort, scoring a total of 326 from 44.5 overs. However, the Sri Lankan national team were eventually bowled out. The top performers of the team included Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka, who scored 76 and 79 runs, respectively. Their totals were scored from 42 and 65 balls, respectively. Sri Lanka can feel proud of their 326 total, even though they were defeated by 102 runs. The team were defeated but still managed to score one of the highest totals in this year’s CWC tournament.
Day Four: India vs Australia
On the 8th of October, Australia scored a total of 199 runs from 49.3 overs. This total was far from secure, as India defeated Australia by six wickets, having scored 201-4 from 41.2 overs. The top scorers for Australia included Steven Smith and David Warner, who scored a total of 46 and 41 runs from 71 and 52 balls, respectively.
India, the host nation of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, scored a total of 201-4 from 41.2 overs. The total still looks impressive today, with the host nation claiming victory in their first game. The top scorers for India included two batsmen, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. Rahul scored a total of 97 runs from 115 balls whilst Kohli scored 85 runs from 116 balls. The two batsmen practically won it, singlehandedly, for India. It puts the host nation in a strong position, having won their opening game.
